Bet Types Explained

Every Type of Bet on TAB Australia — Explained Simply

TAB offers a full range of bet types from simple singles to complex exotic racing bets. Here's what each one means and when to use it.

1️⃣
Single / Win Bet
The simplest bet — pick one team or outcome to win. You win if your selection wins, lose if it doesn't.
🔗
Multi (Accumulator)
Combine 2 or more selections. All must win. Higher risk but multiplied returns. TAB's Multi Boost adds up to 25% extra.
✌️
Each Way
Available in racing. Half your stake on win, half on place (finish top 2–4 depending on field size). Safer return.
🎯
Quinella
Pick 2 horses to finish 1st and 2nd in any order. More likely than an Exacta, lower odds but solid value.
🔢
Exacta
Pick the exact 1st AND 2nd finisher in correct order. Harder to get right, but odds are significantly better than a quinella.
🥉
Trifecta
Name the 1st, 2nd and 3rd finishers in exact order. Difficult but can return large dividends from a small stake.
4️⃣
First4 / Superfecta
Predict the first four finishers in exact order. Used in large fields — best played using boxed or banked combinations.
🏇
Quaddie
Pick the winner in each of the final 4 races of a meeting. A popular pooled bet with dividends often reaching four figures.
âž•
Asian Handicap
A soccer-specific bet where a team is given a goal start or deficit. Eliminates the draw and creates a two-way market.

Understanding Odds

How Betting Odds Work — Australian Decimal Format

Australia uses decimal odds — also called "continental" or "European" odds. They are the easiest format to understand and are used exclusively by TAB. The odds number represents your total return for every $1 staked, including your original stake.

The Formula

Return = Stake × Odds

Example: $50 bet at $2.40 odds → $50 × $2.40 = $120 return ($70 profit)

Odds below $2.00 are called "short-priced" favourites — they win more often but pay less. Odds above $4.00 are longer-priced selections — less likely to win but higher reward when they do. The "book" (combined probability across all selections) always exceeds 100%, which is how bookmakers make a margin over the long term.

Reading the Market

When you see a team's odds shorten (e.g., $2.50 → $2.10), it means the market is receiving heavy money on that selection. This can signal professional punter confidence, injury news or other market-moving information. When odds drift out (e.g., $2.10 → $2.80), confidence is moving away from that selection.

TAB's sports betting markets update continuously and reflect real-time money flows. For horse racing, the final odds are set by the pool at race close time (tote betting) or fixed at acceptance time (fixed odds).

If you plan on doing a lot of live betting, the live betting guide explains how odds behave differently in-play — they react to real events rather than pre-game expectations.

First Bet FAQ

What's the minimum bet on TAB Australia?+
The minimum bet is $1.00 on most sports and $0.50 on racing exotics. Some special markets have a higher minimum. There is no upper limit on most head-to-head markets — contact VIP support if you need to place very large bets.
How long does it take to withdraw winnings?+
Withdrawals to your nominated bank account settle in 1–3 business days via direct transfer. PayID withdrawals settle same-day in most cases. There are no fees on withdrawals from TAB.
Can I cancel a placed bet?+
Once placed, bets cannot be cancelled on TAB unless the event is abandoned or the market is voided. If you're in a winning position before the event is over, consider using Cash Out instead of waiting for the result.
What happens if I bet on a scratched horse?+
If your selection is scratched before the race, your bet is refunded to your TAB account balance in full. For multi bets, the scratching becomes a leg with $1.00 odds (a "banker" pass-through), and the multi continues with the remaining legs.
Is GST or tax applied to winnings?+
In Australia, betting winnings are generally not subject to income tax for casual punters as they are considered a hobby activity. However, if you bet professionally or systematically for income, different tax treatment may apply. Always consult a qualified Australian tax adviser for personal advice.
